Getting to know your breasts and regular checking is at the top of our agenda this month and beyond. Here’s a useful guide to checking your breasts with confidence…
Step 1: How to check
Feel each breast and armpit, and up to your collarbone. You may find it easiest to do this in the shower or bath, by running a soapy hand over each breast and up under each armpit. It’s also important to look at your breasts in the mirror. Look with your arms by your side and also with them raised.
Step 2: Things to consider
The menstrual cycle can cause changes in your breasts so it’s important to check during these times. Use this time as a reminder to check your breasts each month. Similarly, the menopause can cause changes to your breasts so check regularly.
Step 3: Know what to look out for
- A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
- A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look red or inflamed
- A nipple change, for example it has become pulled in (inverted)
- Rash or crusting around the nipple
- Unusual liquid (discharge) from either nipple
- Changes in size or shape of the breast
Step 4:
If you spot any changes, no matter how small contact a GP immediately.
Step 5:
If you are aged between 50 and 70 attend regular breast screenings.
Step 6:
Ideally you want to check your breasts every 2 months.
